SkyCaddie SG5 Golf GPS (Black) Review

Just purchased the SG5 Skycaddie after owning the SG4, and I like this color gps. It is especially handy on courses I have never played, and it is accurate. I find I use it most often when I approach a hazard, and it helps me decide if I can clear the obstacle or lay up. In my opinion it saves 4-5 strokes a game. The accessories (car charger, mount, etc.) can be pricey, but you can get great deals on-line. You must buy a yearly subscription for a minimum of .95 which provides courses for your state only. For approximately more you can get all the courses for the U.S. One of my minor complaints is they will provide a Beta upgrade of the basic operating system for another -20, and I think this should be provided free (this provides and enhanced view of the course, and it will allow you to download up to 20 courses on your gps (normally you can download only 10 courses at any one time)). Because Skycaddie is coming out with a new pricier model you can get the SG5 at a great price. I was able to buy mine for 0 through Amazon, and I think it is a great buy! Trying to get phone support can be difficult, but you can send them an e-mail, and they will respond in a day or so. It may try your patience, but many of my friends have succeeded in getting their systems up and running.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Can the SG5 give me the distance to the pin?
A: The SkyCaddie, using the IntelliGreen graphics found on our professionally recorded SkyCourses, provides more information than just the distance to the pin. Once the line of play is selected on the graphical green outline, it provides the minimum carry to get on the green, the maximum limit you have to the back of the green, plus you can adjust to obtain the third distance of the approximate flag location. All three distances are provided simultaneously from any direction as you approach the green. You can then frame your shot in a much larger target area and select the best club. You will hit more greens and have shorter putts than a single number can provide.

Customer Reviews

service is terrible – Logan D. Fitch – usa
The SG5 worked well for a time, but when it failed, so did their customer service department. The customer service system is cumbersome, non-responsive and gives bad advice, I guess, just to get you off the line. I will never buy another product from them and I highly recommend others to seek another alternative

Terrible Customer Service from SkyGolf – J. Cooper –
Given my experiences with SkyGolf, I can never recommend SkyGolf/SkyCaddie to anyone. SkyGolf’s customer “service” is among the worst I have ever encountered. Its agents are unskilled in handling non-technical issues (the only type about which I have contacted SkyGolf). One agent in particular was rude and unprofessional throughout both of the calls I made to SkyGolf. The supervisor to whom that agent connected me was dismissively uncaring regarding the manner in which the agent had handled my contact with him.

I have had to wait as much as 45 minutes before “the next available agent” even initially answers my call and an additional, excessively lengthy time even after that initial answer. For example, when I asked to speak with a supervisor during my June 1, 2010 call to SkyGolf, the agent took ten minutes to connect me to her.

The SG5 I purchased in late 2008 required repairs () in May 2010 – less than two years after I purchased it! The issue was with the unit not holding a charge, even after I replaced the battery with one from SkyGolf. The repair did not result from anything I had done to the unit. It was from a technical flaw from SkyGolf.

Based on my experience, then, I absolutely do not endorse SkyGolf as a company with whom to do business, given the abysmal customer “service” and lack of professionalism in that regard. In addition, I recommend that you not even consider purchasing their products, given their flaws and need for repair.

Incredible machine – Y. Brown –
I have had my unit for 3 seasons now and it is incredible. The accuracy has been amazing and often knows better than the courses own direction. It has had every course I have gone to play except one. It is unfortunate to have to pay a yearly fee but this gives me security that there is something in it for them to keep the courses upto date. I am very happy that each season they have allowed for software upgrades that have made it even better than I had orignially purchased it based on. for example, the original unit did not offer scoring and now it does. This year it will now even track your game play and calculate your handicap on line. The displays have even upgraded and changed each year as well. These are the types of upgrades that I believe are possible due to the membership fees. I do not believe that this unit will become obsolete any time soon. I highly recommend it.
